Overview
Improving Health Services in Africa and the Diaspora: Challenges and Opportunities
We are a nonprofit organization committed to utilizing resources and implementing initiatives that aid underserved communities in the U.S. and African countries. Our objective is to enhance healthcare service quality and broaden healthcare access.
From 1997 to 2016, our focus has been on training healthcare providers, creating and managing strategic partnerships, and implementing telemedicine and mobile health clinics in underserved regions of Africa.
Our Work in Africa and the African Diaspora
Africa, home to a population of 1.4 billion people, is rich in natural resources and minerals. Ironically, it is also home to some of the world’s poorest nations. As the new millennium unfolds, Africa is confronted with healthcare challenges. Just over half (52%) of the population has access to healthcare services, and access to essential medicines is even more limited with less than 30% of the population.
To address these issues, it is crucial to embark on coordinated endeavors and prioritize capacity development. The healthcare challenges faced by African nations serve as opportunities for proactive measures to bring about positive change and improvement within the healthcare system.
We aim to efficiently utilize existing resources in Africa, the U.S., and the African Diaspora. Therefore, we can establish strategic partnerships to achieve the organization’s objectives, particularly telemedicine services for underserved communities.
“Healthy life is an outcome of sustainable development, as well as a powerful and undervalued means of achieving it. We need to see health both as a precious asset in itself, and as a means of stimulating economic growth and reducing poverty.”
-Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General, WHO

The Effects of Our Mission
One integral aspect of our mission has been organizing and sponsoring conferences that enable the dissemination and exchange of medical and public health information. The inaugural conference took place from October 5-8, 1997, in Sun City, South Africa. A follow-up conference was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1999. These two events proved to be a catalyst in healthcare, leading to increased requests from African Ministers of Health for IME’s technical assistance in enhancing and expanding their capabilities to deliver effective health programs.
As a response, we expanded our operations to encompass a wide range of critical technical assistance services. These aimed to bolster the capacity of African health professionals in planning, implementing, and managing health programs. This expansion provided us with a unique opportunity to take an active role in developing sustainable healthcare systems across Africa.
Conference and Workshops
Among nonprofit 501(c)(3) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), our commitment to enhancing the professional education of healthcare professionals is unparalleled. This is achieved through international conferences and symposia that target the U.S. underserved population and African health issues. Below are highlights of recent IME-sponsored conferences. Our commitment to continuing medical education (CME) is focused on:
- International Consortia of Academic Institutions
- Development of Curricula and Materials That Specifically Address African Needs
- Distribution and Dissemination of Information via High and Low-Bandwidth Internet
